Insulating Shops and Barns on the Western Slope
Garage, shop and pole barn insulation is a big part of the work across the Grand Valley. From orchards around Palisade to ranches near Loma and hay fields toward Mack, there are a lot of metal shops, pole barns and detached garages here, plus attached garages on nearly every house. Uninsulated steel buildings are too cold to work in on January mornings and too hot on July afternoons, and when the inside air warms up in winter, moisture condenses on the cold steel and drips.
Closed-cell on steel
Closed-cell spray foam bonds directly to steel panels and framing, so there is no gap for warm, moist air to reach the cold metal. That stops condensation. HomeGuide rates it at about R-5 to R-7 per inch and lists it at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot. For a heated shop, we spec enough thickness to make heating practical; for a barn that only needs to stop dripping or stay above freezing for equipment, a thinner coat may do.
Pole barns with wood framing
Pole barns with wood girts and purlins can get foam on the steel skin, or framed walls filled with foam or batts and covered. The choice depends on how the building is used and whether you want a finished interior. We talk through the options and price the ones that fit.
Attached garages
An attached garage that stays near freezing in winter cools the rooms around it and above it. Sealing and insulating the shared walls and the ceiling under any living space helps those rooms. If you use the garage as a workshop or gym, insulating the exterior walls and ceiling and addressing the overhead door makes it usable year-round.
Code notes
Shops and garages used as living or work space need the thermal barrier the code calls for over exposed foam. Purely agricultural buildings may follow different rules. We list the barrier or coating that applies on the quote.

Garage, Shop & Pole Barn Insulation Questions
How much foam does a metal shop need in Grand Junction?
For a heated shop, enough to make heating practical and keep the inside surface above the dew point; for an unheated barn, often just a thin coat to stop condensation. The quote lists inches.
Can you insulate a pole barn with wood framing?
Yes. Foam can go on the steel skin, or framed walls can be filled and covered.
Will insulating my garage help the room above it?
Yes. Sealing and insulating the garage ceiling under the room cuts cold air and heat loss.
Do I need a coating over foam in a barn?
Depends on use and the product. We list it on the quote.
